Radar Detector’s Speciality
October 26, 2007
Radar detector is an alerting device which alerts you to a speed trap and makes you to be more cautious while driving. For people who like to drive very fast, this radar detector is more useful. Radar detector consists of various glossaries which help to operate its activities.
Audio warning ‘beep’ sound of radar detector grows faster as you are nearing a radar source. On other hand visible alarms display signal strength. Radar detector has auto-muting feature which replaces audio alert with a signal alert. City/ highway switch can eliminate the false alarms of non-police X-band emanation. To keep the detector in the dash mount use Velcro strips. If you drive at night, the dim or dark mode of detector eliminates illumination on alarms and controls.
“Instant-on” protection
K-band radar guns has “instant-on” radar feature which keeps the transmitter in "hot standby" mode. This can be activated by an officer when the target is within 200-300 yards. If this is aimed at you, before you get alert by your detector, your speed is measured by the “instant-on” feature. If a car ahead of you is targeted by the radar, then your detector being sensitive to K-band reception will alert you.
K-band
Frequently used radar frequency band is 20.05 to 24.25 GHz. The new "pulsed" version is used to detect from stationary to moving vehicles. Small wavelength K-band radar has effective clocking range of ¼ mile in police radar guns. This wave can be detected from a range of ¼ mile to 2 miles.
Ka-band
Ka-band incorporates Ka-band, Ka Wide-band and Ka- super wide-band. Photo radar was also introduced with this Ka-band. Photo-cop system combines a Ka-band radar gun with an automated camera which works at 34.3 GHz. The range of Ka-band expanded Ka wide-band from 34.2 to 35.2 GHz.
Ku-band
Ku-band ranges between 12 and 18 GHz. For communication in both, aerospace and broadcasting Ku-band is used.
Laser
Laser light pulses are used by the police laser rather than radio waves which detects the speed. The beam of laser light is narrower than radar beam which takes just 2 to 3 seconds to capture speed of specific vehicle. One of the main disadvantages is that it cannot be used from a moving vehicle or from behind glass and is too expensive.
Photo Radar (Photo Cop)
Volume control or mute feature in radar detector turns off or turns down the audible alert and show the visible alert. An automated camera is provided with Photo-cop and Ka-band radar gun. This technology based camera can capture the picture of the vehicle approaching at or above predetermined speed. The camera can capture the picture of the license plate, front of the vehicle and the driver’s face, date, location and time. It has the ability to clock and photograph 200 vehicles per hour. The film is printed in ticket form and mailed to the owner of the vehicle which has been registered. On receiving the ticket, the owner of the vehicle must pay the fine. It can capture the picture of the speeding vehicle even at a distance of 120 to 300 feet, because of the effective range of photo-cop.
Pulse radar
As pulse radar guns can transmit a burst of energy every two seconds, it can be used from moving vehicles and even from a stationary position.
Remote mount is another technology in radar detectors which consists of two piece detector. It has an antenna which is mounted behind the car’s grill. The display and control are placed in or under the car dash. Cable or wireless transceiver is used to connect this remote mount radar detector.
• Safety warning system SWS is radar used for highway safety by transmitting a signal to alert.
• Selectivity, a detector’s ability which detects police radar ignoring all other device presence.
• Sensitivity is the ability of a detector to detect radar.
• Stalker, a hand-held radar gun to operate anywhere on the Ka-band which range between 33.4 and 36.0 GHz.
• Super-heterodyne is a method of building or designing wireless communication or broadcast equipment.
• Text display detects the speed that you are up against. It also display SWS alert.
• VG-2 is a detector that detects vehicles with radar detector operating. In some cases if VG-2 is sensed by the radar detector, it can shut down itself until VG-2 passes by.
• X-band radar can detect from a distance of 2 to 4 miles.
Radar Detector- Types and Details
October 22, 2007
Radar Detectors are widely used in vehicles nowadays. These are available in three different types. They are the corded detectors, the cordless detectors and remote mount detectors to name them specifically. The corded detectors provide the best range and are usually mounted on the windshield through suction cups. The cordless detectors as the name suggests are cordless and can be shifted easily from one vehicle to another and its installation too is neat in comparison to corded detectors. Remote mount detectors are installed in your vehicles permanently and cannot be easily detected by thieves or others.
Features of Radar detectors
When they are in the city mode it cuts down its sensitivity and thus is helpful in giving you lesser false alerts. Laser detectors are available with one laser or with 360 degree laser detection. When the one with a laser sensor can detect only your vehicles front area the 360 degree laser detector can give you front, back as well as sides. These are considered to more reliable and costly too. VG 2 and Specter protection detectors let you know when the police is making use of radar detectors and Specter provides you with invisible protection from VG2 and Specter letting you to be invisible. Digital voice alerts are the one advantage and in this way you do not have to distract yourself from your driving to look into the display of the detectors. Instant on protectors are hard to be escaped but can be found out or alerted if you have a high K band reception detector in your vehicle.
By installing your vehicle with the latest Radar Detectors you can enjoy the way you drive without being bothered. X band Radars and K band radars are the most commonly used and among them K band radars have proved out to excel the X band radars. Latest models are in the markets that will meet your demands along with being economical at the same time with highest of efficiency. So do not hesitate to install one that will help you enjoy your drive at the same time keep you away from driving hazards too.
