Radar Detectors - The friend of the motorists
December 8, 2007
A radar detector is definitely a very good friend of the motorists. The generally asked question “Radar Detectors-Friend or foe?” is inappropriate as it’s a perfect friend, not foe. A radar detector is a radio-like appliance that scans the programmed frequencies that are approved by the Federal Communications commissioner to law enforcements worldwide. A good radar detector can detect and pick up all the frequencies of police radar and laser. The laser is something that sends beams of light to refract and reflect the beams of the speeding vehicles and return to the laser unit. The speed is subsequently premeditated by measuring of how quickly these lights are reflected given the speed of light. A good radar detector can pick up the frequencies of the police radar in addition to the laser.
One of the common misbelieves is that it causes the motorists to speed, though no evidence have been gathered to support it so far! People who possess radar detectors do drive dangerously and hostile as such folks tend to believe that they are immune from being stopped and found with a speeding ticket. This of course is entirely wrong, as to the law enforcing officers radar detectors pose no difference! The public’s determines average traffic speed view of what they think is safe or unsafe, and radar detector owners are safer drivers as they use the seatbelts too.
With a radar detector, one can assess the presence of a police car nearby and reduce the chances of being stopped for speeding, the subsequent tickets and insurance surcharges. When considering the amount to be paid to the Law enforcement Officers and Insurance, purchasing high quality radar is economical, saving hundreds of pounds in the long run. When the police uses the laser, one should be conscious of the laser mode on the radar, which when being used is shot directly at the front license plate and leaves little time to correct the speed limits! It takes time; practice and effort as travelling at high speed can cost the life instead of reaching the destination faster and saving time.

Radar detectors have an important role to play in our life with technology playing a good role. Radar Detectors are available in three diverse kinds namely Corded Detectors, Cordless Detectors and Remote Mount Detectors. The Cordless detectors are the ones that provide the best range in detection and are normally mounted on the windshields of the vehicles through the suction cups. The cordless detectors provide a cleaner installation as there are no cords in them and these types of detectors can be easily shifted from one vehicle to another. The remote detectors cannot be detected by others and it is permanently mounted to the vehicles.
Some of the features that come in Radar detectors are mentioned below. Those Radars with City Modes are very helpful when one is in the city, driving, as it will cut down the range or sensitivity of the detectors and thereby the false alerts you get are fewer in comparison. Another feature is the Laser Detection feature. The Radar detectors with Laser detection are capable of detecting laser beams in front of the vehicle only. This feature does not show any signals for detecting either sides or back of the vehicle. Hence to get a full coverage one has to install a 360 degree laser detector that is available with two sensors to detect both the sides and back for laser signals. This type is comparatively costlier but more reliable too.
VG -2 and Specter Protection is another feature and is helpful to give you the signal when the Police are using Radar Detector Detectors (RDD). The Specter Protection is the latest available with the RDD Technology which is used now in several states including Canada. Some of these provide with Stealth Protection too by giving the signal and then automatically shuts down so that it is not detectable by other sources. Some detectors come with both VG-2 and Specter Protection and hence turn out to be providing with Invisible protection and thus very expensive too.
The Digital Voice Alerts in the Radar detectors are helpful as they are supported with a voice alert that tells you what they have detected and thus you do not have to look into the display and get distracted from your driving even for a second. The instant On Protection available in the Detectors if aimed at you measures the speed at the time your detector detects the detector. But if it was targeted on the car in front of you then your detector could detect it as a sensitive K band alert. Thus those with K band sensitivity are now in the move as it will alert on Instant on Protection Detectors.
Hence depending upon the features one could select Radar detectors. As the feature gets better the cost part too gets higher.
Radar Detector an Alerting Device
November 9, 2007
Radar detectors are not introduced for those who love to drive fast but it is a warning system which provides a timely alert to traffic obstacles, and it also helps you avoid accidents. Drivers are wrongly cited for speeding as police radar guns are fallible sometimes and help you tap down the speed and be extra cautious.
Radar detectors are used to pick up the frequencies used by police radars. There are detectors that can receive signals sooner than other. If you have a battery unit it may sometimes give false signals. Banks and department stores use radar technology of motion-sensing burglar alarms which can be construed as police radar detector. It is equipped with low-powered radar system that assists in crash avoidance, aid in parking, and act as rear blind-spot alerts. There are cruise controls systems that use a form of radar which automatically reduces the speed of the car as it comes upon slower traffic.
Laser technologies traffic radar measures the speed using a microwave pulse. It sends out pulse series using successive timings to tell the speed of a vehicle while it is travelling. In laser the beam is tightly focused and travels with higher frequency, it must be activated from an immobile position. It is not used as the stationary to trap speeding. With beam tightly focused it aims at one specific target, so it can detect it in fraction of a second.
Highly accurate radar detector is rare in practice operating with low frequency, and it scatters the signal by dust and moisture in the air.
Make sure that the laser unit evaluated is capable of receiving X, K, and Ka bands. Its detection is usually reported in time to warn that you’re about to receive a ticket.
Safety Warning System transmits signal in the lower K band, warns the driver of traffic risks, unsuspecting events ahead to face. This detector usually reports SWS alert while higher-end units report alert message. Though is not yet used widely, the system will be in commonplace in less time. This system will be installed by more automobile manufacturers which should persuade added widespread use of transmitters.
Radar Detector to Detect Police Radar
November 2, 2007
Radar detector is an alerting device which is very helpful to people who like to drive very fast. Recently developed radar detectors are provided with early alerts to traffic and also help you avoid accidents. Radar detector can pick up the frequencies used by the police radar. Detectors that report the general direction from where the signal is coming are the best units.
Radar technology that can be interpreted as police radar is used in banks and department stores. Recently cars are equipped with low powered radar systems to avoid crash, aid in parking and it acts as blind-spot alerts as well.
Traffic radar measures the speed with the support of microwave pulse in laser technologies. In this technology, it sends out the series of pulses and using timings, the unit can detect the speed of a vehicle.
Some states and localities have passed laws to ban radar detector usages. In future this law will be counted as invalid. But for time being, the usage of radar detector may cause fine and equipment disablement.
All radar detectors leak a signal which can be detected. In some area where it is illegal to use radar detector, police use VG-2-in system to detect the user. These police detectors have a range anywhere from 0.5 mile to 2 miles.
VG-2 is a detector which also leaks a discernible signal, so radar detector has the capacity to detect leaks. Radar detector will shut itself down until VG-2 signal is received no longer. In this case the driver needs to be extra cautious as the radar detector’ receipt of radar signal is not possible.
City mode radar detector will reduce the number of false alerts. All radar detectors report the presence of police radar. Low end units display only signal strength with single audible beep. Muting is another feature in radar detector. In this mode visual and audio alerts are given for few seconds, followed by muting audio signal. Remote mounting and cordless radar detectors are also available now.
Radar Detector’s Speciality
October 26, 2007
Radar detector is an alerting device which alerts you to a speed trap and makes you to be more cautious while driving. For people who like to drive very fast, this radar detector is more useful. Radar detector consists of various glossaries which help to operate its activities.
Audio warning ‘beep’ sound of radar detector grows faster as you are nearing a radar source. On other hand visible alarms display signal strength. Radar detector has auto-muting feature which replaces audio alert with a signal alert. City/ highway switch can eliminate the false alarms of non-police X-band emanation. To keep the detector in the dash mount use Velcro strips. If you drive at night, the dim or dark mode of detector eliminates illumination on alarms and controls.
“Instant-on” protection
K-band radar guns has “instant-on” radar feature which keeps the transmitter in "hot standby" mode. This can be activated by an officer when the target is within 200-300 yards. If this is aimed at you, before you get alert by your detector, your speed is measured by the “instant-on” feature. If a car ahead of you is targeted by the radar, then your detector being sensitive to K-band reception will alert you.
K-band
Frequently used radar frequency band is 20.05 to 24.25 GHz. The new "pulsed" version is used to detect from stationary to moving vehicles. Small wavelength K-band radar has effective clocking range of ¼ mile in police radar guns. This wave can be detected from a range of ¼ mile to 2 miles.
Ka-band
Ka-band incorporates Ka-band, Ka Wide-band and Ka- super wide-band. Photo radar was also introduced with this Ka-band. Photo-cop system combines a Ka-band radar gun with an automated camera which works at 34.3 GHz. The range of Ka-band expanded Ka wide-band from 34.2 to 35.2 GHz.
Ku-band
Ku-band ranges between 12 and 18 GHz. For communication in both, aerospace and broadcasting Ku-band is used.
Laser
Laser light pulses are used by the police laser rather than radio waves which detects the speed. The beam of laser light is narrower than radar beam which takes just 2 to 3 seconds to capture speed of specific vehicle. One of the main disadvantages is that it cannot be used from a moving vehicle or from behind glass and is too expensive.
Photo Radar (Photo Cop)
Volume control or mute feature in radar detector turns off or turns down the audible alert and show the visible alert. An automated camera is provided with Photo-cop and Ka-band radar gun. This technology based camera can capture the picture of the vehicle approaching at or above predetermined speed. The camera can capture the picture of the license plate, front of the vehicle and the driver’s face, date, location and time. It has the ability to clock and photograph 200 vehicles per hour. The film is printed in ticket form and mailed to the owner of the vehicle which has been registered. On receiving the ticket, the owner of the vehicle must pay the fine. It can capture the picture of the speeding vehicle even at a distance of 120 to 300 feet, because of the effective range of photo-cop.
Pulse radar
As pulse radar guns can transmit a burst of energy every two seconds, it can be used from moving vehicles and even from a stationary position.
Remote mount is another technology in radar detectors which consists of two piece detector. It has an antenna which is mounted behind the car’s grill. The display and control are placed in or under the car dash. Cable or wireless transceiver is used to connect this remote mount radar detector.
• Safety warning system SWS is radar used for highway safety by transmitting a signal to alert.
• Selectivity, a detector’s ability which detects police radar ignoring all other device presence.
• Sensitivity is the ability of a detector to detect radar.
• Stalker, a hand-held radar gun to operate anywhere on the Ka-band which range between 33.4 and 36.0 GHz.
• Super-heterodyne is a method of building or designing wireless communication or broadcast equipment.
• Text display detects the speed that you are up against. It also display SWS alert.
• VG-2 is a detector that detects vehicles with radar detector operating. In some cases if VG-2 is sensed by the radar detector, it can shut down itself until VG-2 passes by.
• X-band radar can detect from a distance of 2 to 4 miles.
